Robert Anderson of Scotland was the first person to build a crude electric carriage in the 19th century, but not much progress was made till the last few decades. The impact of fossil based vehicles on the environment along with the depleting petroleum resources and sharp increase in costs has led to a renewed interest in electric vehicles. Electric powered vehicles are the cleanest and most fuel efficient mode of transport known as of now apart from human or animal powered vehicles. And the interest and technological innovation in this field has been increasing daily.
The first modern electric passenger car to be sold in the mass market was built by GM in 1996 and since then, almost all major car manufacturers have either already launched or gearing up to launch electric passenger vehicles. Many governments of nations are increasing their efforts in commercializing electric vehicles. Meetings were convened by Climate Groups to help fast-track global development of electric vehicles. Heads of regional governments, policy-makers, manufacturers and bankers from over eight countries met in Copenhagen on the sidelines of the UN’s climate talks to discuss electric vehicle development around the world in 2010.
In order to appeal to a larger audience, manufacturers have started making electric vehicles that looks like any conventional car. One now has the option to choose from luxurious electric vehicles to even high performance electric vehicles that can put any conventional engine vehicle to shame. Manufacturers like Tesla and Artega are manufacturing high performance electric vehicles that can compete with any traditional sports car in terms of looks and performance while keeping emissions and noise levels low or virtually non-existent. Even traditional sports car manufacturer like Porche have jumped into the electric vehicle bandwagon to create electric vehicles that looks and performs like any of their current products.
All in all, electric vehicles are eco-friendly and it does not cause any harm to atmosphere. They are friendly to eco system and they don’t release any harmful gas into atmosphere that affects the ozone layer. They are silent and do not create noise pollution. The most sustainable mode of power source for vehicles known as yet, electric power seems to be the energy that will drive all the vehicles of the future. The electric vehicles are the need of the hour. We can save our planet with the help of these environment friendly vehicles.
